My name is Maxine Keefe and I have been practicing Reiki since 2012. Since then I have treated people ranging from children to those in their nineties for a wide range of physical and emotional conditions ranging from stress, anxiety and sleep problems. I also treat dogs and horses with issues such as arthritis, separation anxiety and loading problems. Please read on to discover how Reiki can benefit you both.
Reiki is a gentle, yet effective complementary therapy that promotes deep relaxation and natural healing. It works by using energy to balance you on many levels – physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. The energy is the same that is worked with in Acupuncture, Shiatsu, Tai Chi and Yoga. It is suitable for everyone as it works safely alongside conventional medicine.
Reiki is non invasive and uses no pressure or manipulation. It is a holistic therapy treating the cause of the problem and not just the presenting condition. It can bring many benefits such as deep relaxation, reduced stress and anxiety, increased energy levels, feeling of inner calm and contentment and it speeds up the bodies own healing systems.
Human treatments take place on a couch in a warm, quiet room with gentle music playing. During the treatment I will work my way around your body with my hands either resting gently on you or hovering just above. Most people seem to experience deep relaxation whilst they are receiving Reiki. You may also feel heat, cold or tingling coming from my hands, see colours or feel like you are floating or sinking into the couch. Some people feel nothing at all and just go to sleep! It varies a great deal from one person to another, but no matter what you feel during your treatment Reiki is giving you what you need.
Whilst a one-off treatment would be beneficial, to get the most from Reiki I would recommend a course of treatments. This would consist of 5 treatments, of either 40 minute or hourly length, at weekly or fortnightly intervals. However everyone is treated as an individual and sometimes fewer treatments are required. Following the initial course of treatments many clients have monthly sessions as they enjoy the peace, relaxation and healing that Reiki brings them.
Dogs and horses
I always treat animals in the comfort of their own home or stable! Reiki can help horses and dogs in many ways; by calming before competition or changing yards, to delving deep into physical or emotional problems, (such as mistreatment or bad experiences), helping them to release and move on.
What could Reiki do for my animal?
Physical – such as tendon/ligament injuries, laminitis, sweet itch, stiffness, loss of appetite and post operative recovery
Emotional – pre show nerves, competition stress (horse and rider), moving yards and separation anxiety, bereavement and loss
Behavioural – stable vices, spooking, loading problems, mistreatment and bad experiences
Groundwork - performance issues
Owner / Horse relationship - develop a closer bond
Healthy animals can benefit from Reiki too! Treat your pet to a deeply relaxing treatment that will enhance their general well being.
There are 3 ways to treat your horse, tied up, free in the stable/field or sometimes over the stable door. The horse will decide which option is most suitable and all methods are equally effective. Most horses will show deep relaxation during their treatment, however if they are having a release of some kind they maybe fidgety or unsettled.
Treatments usually last for around 1 hour although some sessions have been known to last up to 2 hours! Initial treatments maybe shorter as the horse gets used to the healing energies working on them. The horse decides how much Reiki they have and it what circumstances.
To give Reiki to a dog is also a simple process. They will guide me as to whether they want to receive the healing sitting on my lap, laying next to me or moving freely around the room as they wish during the treatment. Then I will either lay my hands on the animals body or from a short distance away, depending on how they wish to receive the energy.
The great thing about using Reiki on animals is that you can “see” it working. Your pet will most likely relax and some will lie down and go into a deep sleep next to me. If they are having a release of some kind they maybe fidgety and unsettled for a while. Dogs can react in different ways and some may not show any obvious signs of relaxation during their treatment. They will wait until they are alone and then go to sleep to enjoy the healing energies. No matter how your pet responds, Reiki is giving them what they need. Treatments lengths vary depending on the individual dog. Some will only need a short session of healing energy while others enjoy longer treatments of around 40 minutes. Your dog will decide how much they have and it what circumstances.
With both horses and dogs after a treatment it is best to leave them for a couple of hours to fully absorb the energies and allow the healing to continue. They may feel calm and relaxed or they could be energised, all animals will respond in the way that is right for them. They may drink more water than usual and pass more wind/faeces, this is normal as Reiki helps the body to re balance and release what is not needed.
Whilst a one off treatment would be beneficial, to get the most from Reiki a course of 4 – 6 treatments would be recommended. However, every animal is treated as an individual and sometimes fewer treatments are required.
