vitamin B from yeast or tablets?

    Having malabsorption, for my vitamin B I've been taking 6 brewer's yeast tablets a day (=3,000 mg) as it says on the bottle, and I'm happy with that. But now I wonder what the difference is between yeast and vitamin B-complex? They couldn't even tell me in the shop.

    Read the label to see what they contain.....that will tell you what the difference is.

    . You say you have malabsorption......did you doctor not prescribe anything? What were your symptoms? Is it only B vitamins affected? You say you were happy with the brewers yeast....what made you 'happy' with that ? And why do you now doubt it is being effective?

    After successful chemoradiation for cervical cancer ten years ago, I was left with malabsorption. I wasn't prescribed anything, but worked out over the years what I needed. For vitamin B I used brewer's yeast, I can't remember why. B12 I have separately, in a very large dose once a month.
    I've had no symptoms of vitamin B shortage. Only when I used to keep the kefir in a clear bottle did I get short of B2, but that was easily remedied!
    On the yeast jar it only says that it contains brewer's yeast, bulking agents etc, nothing about the nutrients.
    I have no doubts about its effectiveness, it works for me. But I just saw the B-complex tablets in the shop, and I'm curious about the difference.

    Brewers yeast has all the B vitamins except Vit B12. It is fine to take unless you have a yeast condition, e.g. thrush, athlete's foot or candida.

    Try and get non debittered yeast. Some makes don't say on the label whether the yeast is debittered or not which is a bit cheeky to say the least.

    What happens in the debittering (which removes the bitter taste of yeast) is that it strips out some of the key nutrients which is bonkers!!

    Chromium for one is removed which is so important for those that take b vits to help with diabetes.

    I take natures aid yeast.

    The yeast in brewers yeast is not an active yeast i.e. will not make a yeast condition like candida any worse.

    Typical!
    I've been having Holland and Barrett yeast lately, which does not say anything about this, of course. However, I do eat plenty of potatoes, tomatoes, mussels and molasses, all good sources, and have not got diabetes. So I don't think I have missed out on that score.
    I had just bought some Holland and Barrett 'Complete B', which does not list chromium either. ?
