    Hi, :)

My English Bull Terrier Dottie (2 years old) broke her leg last Friday and it has been in a splint since.

We were told it would take up to 6-8 weeks to heal, which is a long time. So, I looked into things that could heal her quicker and found about Symphytum. I bought some (30c) on Tuesday and was told to give her six the first day and then 3 the next and, I presume, 3 daily for the rest of the week?

My question is, can I/do I need to give her more than 3 a day, just to get the healing really started and when do I start to reduce the doses?

She is having another x-ray next Monday and then it will be every two weeks after that, where she will also have her splint changed if it needs it.

Any advice will be much appreciated, we just want our Dottie back to normal and she is getting very bored just staying in the flat and not being able to go out on walks! :( She is acting as though she hasn't got a broken leg now and it must be quite frustrating for her.

Can't answer your question but you could try PMing Hom, who can be found on the members list. Hope Dottie feels better soon.

Hi- just caught up with this thread.
Firstly, I should say that homeopaths (unless they are also vets) aren't permitted to advise on the treatment of animals. However, speaking generally, 3 doses of this remedy for a week is fine. I wouldn't advise it more frequently but maybe it could be taken for longer (you need to take advice about that). You don't say who's advised you re the dosage but presumably it's someone who is qualified or has knowledge/experience of homeopathy. This remedy is so successful in 'knitting' the bone together that it's crucial that the fracture is 'set' in place correctly before using it. Otherwise, you risk it healing in not the best position. Given that this is occuring, there is no need to give the remedy more often- it won't promote speedier healing.
Symph.30c is used specifically for fractures so you are doing the best you can but it will still take time....HTH Hom

    Thanks very much Hom!

Yes, I did get the info from somebody who has knowledge/experience of homeopathy.

Dottie is having another x-ray next Monday, so we'll see how the bones healing then. So, we should stop giving her the Symph.30c altogether after a week? I did read somewhere that just giving one tablet a week, after the first week, would be ok?

Well, on pill a week is a big reduction! It's impossible to say without 'taking' the case' so to speak but I think if I was you, I'd reduce it gradually- bearing in mind how long it takes for a fracture to completely heal. Maybe- one pill a day for another week or so. (Always stopping altogether if there seems to be any adverse 'reaction', of course). This is assuming that the xray show it's all going ok.-I'm sure it is. Hom

Well, she had her appointment today with the vet and she was supposed to have another x-ray, but the vet didn't see the need to! :) She had a good feel of Dottie's leg and very slightly moved it, all without removing the splint, and said everything seemed fine. So, Dottie is booked in for a week today to have the x-ray and change her bandages instead.

We are still giving her 3 Symphytum per day for now, but will probably cut it down to 2 a day after a couple more days have gone by.

We've never had a dog with a broken leg before, so we don't know how they are usually acting after just a few days of the leg being in a cast. But, apart from the cast, you wouldn't know she had a broken leg at all! :) :)

Hi, that's good news that things seem to be progressing well. Symph. has a reputation of healing fractures extraordinarily quickly so you do need to start reducing the dose down and aim to get to just one a day soon, I would say. The 'rule' with homeopathy is to stop the remedy as soon as you don't need it - of course that's hard to tell with a fracture. Perhaps you could post on here after the next vet's visit to let us know how it's going. Hom
