    Hi Guys

I would really like to learn the Chinese language, but don't know where to start.
I cannot get to adult education centres because of public transport.

Could anyone recommend any books or software for me.

    Many thanks

    TC x

Have you asked the question on google - several options come up, including this http://www.loecsen.com/travel/0-en-67-2-18-free-lessons-chinese.html

My daughters best friend is off to China in March for a month - she will be learning basic spoken Mandarin by attending a university every day for 3 weeks (she is already fluent in Russian, Polish, German and French!) She said that trying to learn written Chinese will be the next challenge!

If she's in Hong Kong, wouldn't Cantonese have been more use?

For speaking, I highly recommend the Pimsleur audio course, it's excellent. Not cheap, though.

If you want to tackle reading & writing (which is a whole new ball game!) then the books 'Remembering traditional hanzi' or 'remembering simplified hanzi' are also superb.

    Good luck!

I would argue that speaking and writing are entirely different concepts. I have heard good things about the Pimsleur approach, I have not tried it myself (not for Chinese anyway) but from the recommendations I have seen that might be worth looking into. Considering the complexities of writing in Chinese, I honestly have no idea where you would start.

Cool, maybe. But not weird. More people speak a second language than not.
    I'm learning Welsh.
The best thing to do with a dream like that is simply to get on and do it.
