    RE: coldsores

Hmmm... Ok there are loads of things you can take for coldsores. In my experience they don't work. But, for others they clearly do cos the suggestions have been around for since the 80's, at least:

    1. lysine (500mg a day as prevention, up to 3000mg during an attack)
    2. zinc
    3. vit C
    4. neat teatree or lavender essential oil dabbed on the eruption

These things are useless for me, though, as I said they do work for some. The ONLY thing that works for me is Boots coldsore lotion. It is a clear alcohol solution that is in a tiny bottle. I don't recommend their cream. I definitely do recommend the lotion.

I had a coldsore literally every month for nearly 20 years. This was whilst I was a vegan. I now eat fish, meat, and poultry and get a coldsore once every 6 months (usually following sun or wind exposure). So you may take heed of the suggestions to reduce foods containing the amino acid arginine (nuts and legumes).

    Good luck!!!

    RE: coldsores

Hi thanks very much for your suggestions. I have tried the lavender tea tree and it helps a little but they still spread it is always after a hot holiday abroad on the plane on the way home????? Or just after my lips get tight and then I get a tingle then the next few days the coldsores or what ever they are apear as tiny blisters that weep and then get worse I have actually in desperation tried dabbing surgical spirit on them and this has helped to dry them up a bit. I have used the zovirax which doesnt seem to work on me any more and I also use the light zapper thing from argos but I think this works better on individual coldsores as I seem to get quite a few small ones it takes too long to treat each one. I will look out for the first thing you said as i havent heard of that before, I guess it is a supplement of some sort?

    Thanks again love angelic xxxx

It's obviously the sun that is causing them. My husband has the same thing and always uses sunblock on his lips. It always works for him.

    RE: coldsores

i know loads about coldsores. my boyfriend suffers with them, and i read that lemongrass oil does the job. A german hosp did a study on the difference between zovirax and lemongrass. Z patients took 7-10 for the sore to heal. lemongrass patients had the job done in3-5 provided it was applied at the 1st signs of tingling. it works by inhibiting the virus whilst it is infesting the deeper tissues. This means that it stops it dead whilst it is trying to come out. Zovirax only works once the whole thing has infested your lips. HONESTLY< THIS REALLY WORKS!! The study also stated that with continous use, patients reported that their breakouts where virtually non existant. if you want to know any more let me no. I have heaps more info. Good luck.

Obviously zoviarax does work, but only as a money spinner for the manufacturers!!!! at nearly £6.00 a tube it should have some effect..........you would think.!

The homeopathic remedy NAT MUR works too as both prevention and cure, and it is widely available in health food stores and boots the chemist. plus its not outragously expensive!!!

    RE: coldsores

One treatment I get my patients to use is a real treat! Red wine - dabbed on every 4 hours from the first tingle - can often abort a full blown sore. I read some research a couple of years ago that there is an an agent found in the skins of red grapes that is anti-viral to the herpes virus so I picked it up from there. It really does seem to work - and I guess there's nothing wrong with the odd sip too. Seems a shame to waste an open bottle.
    Kindest regards
    Bellis ;)

    RE: coldsores

    Hiya everyone

I know this is an old post, but this morning I awoke with a cold sore, had a rotten head cold all week that was just starting to ease, but it left me with sore lips and now a cold sore.

After reading all the advice about the Lemongrass oil, can I just say I went right ahead and put this stuff on my cold sore.

IT STINGS LIKE NOTHING YOU HAVE EVER FELT BEFORE.

Okay sorry about the shouting, but it is still stinging now and it wasn't bothering me much before I added the oil. After all the pain, I am really hoping it will work soon.....dunno if I dare add another dab of it later on.

    Love Angel x

    RE: coldsores

This was in the papers & Dr Chris Steele from this Morning spoke about this product.

Its called Liqcorice Balm - only available from [link=http://www.skinshop.co.uk]www.skinshop.co.uk[/link]

Its basically a lip balm and a girl discovered it.

She had suffered from constant cold sores for 10 years, she had obviously tried everything, she just bought the product for her lips not cold sores... anyway within a week they had miraculously cleared up, and 6 months on with daily use they had not come back!

Anyway i bought it for my son and myself as he gets really bad cold sores that cover his nose and lips. I can safetly say that we havent had any for 6 months now. I use it regularly, esp if i get a tingle and i have no outbreaks at all.

At the moment no one can say why or how it works but i understand someone is researching it thoroughly.

the balm costs about £10 and would easily last a year or 2 even with daily use.

    RE: coldsores

    Hiya everyone

Well the cold sore arrived yesterday but after the first excrutiation application of the Lemongrass Oil, I have to admit that the cold sore crusted over almost imediatally and it doesn't hurt applying the oil anymore.

The only downside is the Lemongrass oil leaves a yellowish tinge to the area. But at least it seems to be working.

    Love Angel x

P.S. And everwhere I go, people keep saying to me, Can you smell Lemons? ;)

    RE: coldsores

After suffering from cold sores from childhood, i tried absolutely everything, with no results, I then came across Coloidal Silver, and over 2 days drank about 500ml of it. I didnt really think about it, until 6 weeks later I realised I hadnt had my monthly cold sore. That was about 2 years ago, and I havent suffered since...

I find zovirax works but only before the blistering starts if the sneaky little thing has already blistered then I find Blistex works.
